How to Bridge an Amplifier & Two Subwoofers

How to Bridge an Amplifier & Two Subwoofers thumbnail
Send more power to your subwoofers by bridging your amplifier.

Bridging an amplifier combines two channels to increase power output to an audio output device, such as a subwoofer. So to bridge two subwoofers you would need a four channel amp because each subwoofer would be powered by two channels. This method of wiring can be useful if you would like to send more power to your subwoofer than a single channel on your amplifier can provide.

Things You'll Need

  • Speaker wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Spade connectors
  • Crimping tool

Instructions

  1. Wire your subwoofers

    • 1

Use wire cutters to cut two strands of speaker wire, ensuring that each strand is long enough to connect your subwoofer to your amplifier.

    • 2

Use wire cutters to strip about 3/8 of an inch off the plastic covering off of each end of both strands of speaker wire to reveal the copper wiring. Notice that each length of speaker wire has a positive and negative strand.

    • 3

Connect one spade connector to one end of each strand of speaker wire by sliding the spade over the copper wiring and crimping it with the crimping tool.

    • 4

Take one spade connector and slide it one of the subwoofer's terminals. Repeat this step for the other length of speaker wire and other subwoofer.

    Bridge the amplifier

    • 5

Connect the positive polarity of one of the strands of speaker wire to the positive terminal of channel one on the amplifier.

    • 6

Connect the negative polarity from the same strand of speaker wire to the negative terminal of channel two on the amplifier. These two steps bridge channels one and two to power one subwoofer.

    • 7

Connect the positive polarity of the other strand of speaker wire to the positive terminal of channel three on the amplifier.

    • 8

Connect the negative polarity from the same strand of speaker wire to the negative terminal of channel four on the amplifier. These two steps bridge channels three and four to power the second subwoofer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure that you amplifier can be bridged by checking your owner's manual or wiring diagram before attempting these steps.
