How to Install Missing DLL Files

How to Install Missing DLL Files thumbnail
A missing DLL file can result in a program not working.

A Dynamic Link Library (DLL) file is a file that contains data that are used by multiple programs. Consequently, if you uninstall a program, you may unwittingly uninstall a DLL file used by a separate program that you do not wish to uninstall. When you try to use this program, you will see a "DLL is missing" error message. Fortunately, the Windows operating provides a way for users to install missing DLL files without cost.

Instructions

    • 1

Type the name of the missing DLL file into the DLL-Files search box (see Resources).

    • 2

      Click on "Download."

    • 3

Click on "Save As," and save the file to the "C:\Windows\System32" folder.

    • 4

Hold down the Windows key and press "R." The Run box opens.

    • 5

Type "regsvr32 filename.dll" (without the quotation marks) into the Run box. Note that "filename.dll" should be replaced with the name of the Dynamic Link Library (DLL) file that you just downloaded.

    • 6

Click "OK." This will install the missing DLL file.
