How to Crochet an Easy Edging on a Lace Scarf

How to Crochet an Easy Edging on a Lace Scarf thumbnail
Your lace scarf can be made even more beautiful with a crocheted edging.

A lace scarf is beautiful, but you can make it even more eye-catching by crocheting an easy edging, then sewing it on. Because the scarf is such a light, delicate accessory, you need to find an edging that complements the look and laciness of your scarf. A scallop edging is deceptively lacy but very simple, consisting of a single crochet edge with repeating scallops consisting of triple crochet clusters and chains. Make sure to block the edging before sewing it onto your scarf.

Things You'll Need

  • Size 9 or 1.40 mm steel crochet hook
  • Size 10 crochet thread in color of your choice

Chain four; then, leaving the last loop of each triple crochet on your hook, work two triple crochet stitches in the first single crochet of Row 1, yarn over and draw a loop through all three loops on your hook. You have made two triple clusters. (This is Row 2, right side.) (Start the triple cluster by leaving the last loop of each triple crochet on your hook, then yarning over twice and beginning the next triple crochet stitch. When you have two triple clusters on your hook, yarn over and draw a loop through all three loops on your hook.)

Repeat steps 4 and 5 to the end and omit the final three-triple cluster. Finish your thread off and cut it close to the end.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you finish crocheting your edging, pin it out, lightly press it, then stitch it to the lace scarf.

  • To determine how many stitches you need to begin with, make a sample swatch to check the gauge.
