The Dell Latitude C510 is a laptop computer that is no longer being manufactured. Because the Latitude comes with the Windows XP operating system, you'll need to use the Windows XP Start CD to format the hard drive if you want to perform a clean installation.

      Turn on your computer and insert the Windows Start CD into the CD-ROM drive.

      Restart the computer and hold the "F12" key. This allows you to choose the boot sequence. Select the "CD-ROM/DVD-ROM" option to boot from the Windows Start CD. Once your computer boots from the CD, a list of hard drives and partitions appears on the screen.

      Delete any existing partitions. To do this, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to select a partition and press the "D" button to delete the partition. If your computer doesn't have any partitions, skip this step.

      Press "Enter" once there is only one remaining drive listed.

      Select a file system format for your hard drive. Choose the "NTFS" option to format your computer for a clean installation of Windows XP. The computer's hard drive is now formatted completely.

      Enter the product key when prompted. Your computer will install a fresh copy of Windows. Follow the onscreen prompts to enter your operating system preferences.
