How to Use the Hoya R72 with a Digital Camera

Camera filter.

A Hoya R72 filter is typically used with infrared film. Because the film is extremely sensitive to the light it is easy to blow out all the highlights on a picture when capturing content in the sun. The filter reduces the amount of light in the image, allowing you to easily see highlights. Even though the filter is ideally used with infrared film you can use it with a digital camera that has a filter thread around the lens (looks like screw grooves so attachments can be placed on the camera). This helps if you are taking pictures in extremely bright sunlight.

Instructions

    • 1

Look through the user manual of your digital camera to see what size the lens is. This is the size you need for the Hoya R72 filter. If you purchase a lens that is not the correct size it isn't going to fit onto your camera.

    • 2

Purchase the lens from a local camera shop. Most camera shops are going to carry this filter, however you are not going to find it at a standard electronics store such as Best Buy or Radio Shack.

    • 3

Hold the digital camera so the lens is facing up. Place the filter on top of the lens and turn it clockwise. This tightens the filter onto the digital camera.

    • 4

Look through the viewfinder towards the brighter content. Because the filter is so dark it reduces the amount of light that enters the lens, making it easier to see all the highlights off your subject.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid using the Hoya R72 in any light condition that isn't extreme. Shooting under cloud cover or at evening time is just going to result in a dark, gray picture. While using the Hoya R72 change the camera setting to the "scenery." This leaves the shutter open wider and allows more sunlight in. Doing so not only results in greater highlight detail, but you can also see all the shadows and mid tones. Use a tripod when employing the "scenery" mode, because any shaking of the camera results in a blurred image.

Thanks for describing it in a simple way. When I ordered the filter I thought it would come up with instructions how to use it with the lens. But the box said nothing, so I was searching for answer online and found your post and followed the instructions that you gave, it was very easy to follow the instruction. For a beginner like me who is trying to learn things by own small piece of information also becomes a big thing. Thanks for the explanation.
