How to Measure a Cabinet for a Sink
When building custom kitchen cabinets, or just giving a face lift to the ones you had, you will have to deal with new appliances and fixtures. New construction is a lot easier to deal with, because you just order or select the cabinets that you need to match the new appliances. In contrast, replacing old appliances or fixtures in the old cabinets is harder. However, the do-it-yourself handyman can measure the old sink and order a new one that can match the existing hole. Decide on the style and size of the sink that you want. Browse online for the sink and then go to a local supply store to verify the sink is what you want. Download, or ask the salesman for the specifications for the sink. The specifications will give all of the critical dimension needed for the sink.

Measure the width of the cabinet for the sink. Measure the inside width of the cabinet for the sink to fit within. You need a cabinet that has a minimum 2 inches wider interior than what the sinks width in the specifications call for.

Check the depth of the cabinet. Most kitchen cabinets fit a sink in depth but not width. Check the specifications for depth requirements. You also need to have 6 inches of clearance at the rear of the sink for the faucet if it is not part of the sink's design.

Check the height of the sink from the specifications. The sink will take up most of the interior space with the sink and the plumbing required. Check the cabinet to make certain that the interior space is adequate for the sink and the required plumbing.

Tips & Warnings
If replacing an old sink try to get a new one the same size and shape, unless you plan on replacing the counter top.
