Find out your options. While testing online may be the most convenient, many states offer free GED testing through their education departments and at community colleges and community organizations. You should also make sure the online GED you decide upon will meet all your state's requirements and receive recognition from the state's institutions. Not all states allow online GED testing. Different states also vary in the minimum age for receiving a GED. For example, Illinois allows 17-year-olds to take the test, while Virginians must be at least 18, with some exceptions.

Be sure you know the material. You must have a passing grade on all five areas. You may be able to take the tests one at a time, if you feel taking all five at once is too much. If you do not score sufficiently high on certain ones, you can retake only those, in most cases, and perhaps pay an additional fee. To prepare, you can take GED prep programs online or through community colleges and social service organizations in most states. Some are free and some are not.

Try taking a sample test before the real thing. You can find them online and in GED prep books you can buy or check out of the library. If you are supremely confident, skip the prep and take the tests. On the other hand, taking practice tests can reveal areas of weakness. They may also help boost your confidence and relieve test-taking anxiety that could negatively impact your score.

Go online and take the test. Testing may be time-limited, so prepare in advance. Choose a time when you're alert and will have no distractions. Depending on your chosen service, you may need to schedule the testing in advance. Make yourself comfortable and go at it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look for free GED testing online. Some websites that charge for the prep programs will provide the actual testing without charge.
