How Do I Build a Pig Spit?
Nothing says feast like the image of a whole pig roasting on a spit over hot coals. The question is whether to lay out a thousand bucks or more for a factory-made spit, or to make one for yourself. Unless you're planning to become a professional caterer, making your own pig spit is probably the best way to go. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Stainless steel or cast iron rod, at least 80 inches long and 1 3/4 to 2 inches in diameter.
- 2 tree stumps, logs or posts, at least 6 inches in diameter
- Spade or post digger
- Drill
- 2 heavy screw thread eye bolts

With the spade or post digger, dig two holes, 2 feet deep and 3 feet apart. The spit rod should extend past the far edges of each post.

Drill a pilot hole in the top of each post.

Insert the eye screw thread eye bolts into the top of the posts and turn until firmly inserted in the wood.

Mount the pig on the spit rod and insert the ends of the rod into the eye bolts.

Tips & Warnings
Do not use galvanized steel for your spit rod. It is reactive and will spoil the taste of the meat.
