1
Get an undergraduate degree in finance, economics, business or accounting. This will give you a good background in the securities markets and how they work. Do an internship at a brokerage house or money management firm if possible, where you can get a glimpse of everyday market operations.
-
2
Earn a credential, such as the Certified Financial Planner or Chartered Financial Analyst. These designations will give you credibility among both your peers and your clients, and can open many doors for you in your career that would otherwise stay closed.

3
Find a firm to work at and obtain your securities licenses if necessary. You will probably need to get your Series 7 and 66 licenses at the least. You may also need to get licenses to sell commodities futures and life insurance in some cases, depending upon the type of career you choose.
-
4
Spend a few years working as a broker, trader or analyst until you get a feel for the industry. Build up a list of contacts, references and clients. At some point, you may want to go into business for yourself.
-
5
Get a feel for the markets and how they work. Don't be afraid to take some risks and start your own business. You can reap much higher profits if you do so successfully. Use your experience and your knowledge of the markets to build a name for yourself and separate yourself from the competition.
