When a large area needs to be painted in a short amount of time, a spray gun system will get the job done efficiently. There are two main kinds of spray gun systems: airless and canister. Airless systems use inline liquid pressure to drive the system while canister systems use compressed air. For painting interior walls and ceilings, airless systems are the most efficient. There are four important stages in the painting process when using an airless spray gun system: surface preparation, masking, application and cleanup. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Apply paintable silicone caulk generously to all wall-to-molding joints, nail holes and minor imperfections. Wipe the excess caulking off with a clean, damp cloth.

    • 2

Clean and sand all surface areas with 120- and then 220-grit sand paper. Remove all dust and debris from the surfaces to be painted.

    • 3

Mask off any area that you do not want to be painted. For wider areas, masking tape and masking paper can be used to bridge the distance. Cover carpets, furniture and doorways to protect areas and fixtures of the home you do not wanted painted. Overspray will fill a wide area around the spray gun so you will want to cover all unpainted areas thoroughly.

    • 4

Apply the paint to the walls, ceilings and desired surfaces; use broad sweeping motions. Hold the spray gun 12 to 18 inches from the surface, keeping the tip of the gun parallel to the painting surface; do not arc your spray motion. At the end of each stoke, release the trigger on the spray gun a few inches prior to ending the spray motion to prevent inappropriate paint build up at each end of the spray motion cycle.

    • 5

Clean the spray gun system thoroughly with chemicals recommended by the paint manufacturer. Simply flush the system with the recommended chemicals until the materials spraying out of the gun are clear and free of paint.
