How to Apply for a Modeling Job With the Top Agencies
Applying for a modeling job is not like applying for any other career. It takes research and industry knowledge to know your niche while marketing yourself to the buyer who is specifically looking for what you have to offer. Landing a job for a top agency rarely happens overnight and takes dedication and work from even the world's top supermodels. Constantly testing with photographers is key to building a strong portfolio that will land you jobs.

1
Distinguish what division or market you are suited for. If you are a female and over 5'9" you should try for fashion modeling. If you are a dress size 8-16, you should try for plus-size modeling. Research the top agencies and compare yourself to the models they already have. If you have a unique look, choose an agency that deals only with those types of models. Research the top agencies and make a list of your top choices.

Find out whether the agencies on your list hold open calls in your area. If you do not live near a major fashion district such as New York, London, or Paris find out the agency's model submission guidelines so that you can send a clear photo and your contact information.

Go to an open call or casting. Be prepared for constructive or even unconstructive criticism. Either way, these castings will likely teach you what the agency is looking for. If the agency sees potential, you will be set up to test shoot with a photographer. This will allow the agency to see how you photograph and will allow you to start building your model portfolio.

Tips & Warnings
Be aware that most people get signed to agencies in their early teens. If you are over 18, it will be more difficult to get signed to a top agency.
If you do not get signed to a top agency, there are many other legit agencies that might sign you. You can get the contact information for other agencies in the Ross Reports, a quarterly guide to castings in New York and LA.
If you are under 18, always bring a parent or guardian with you to castings and test shoots.
Never pay money to a modeling agency. Legitimate modeling agencies will never ask you for money in order to be represented by them.
