How to Refinish an Outside Oven Door
Over time, nicks and scratches can mar the outside of over doors, making them look cheap and unattractive. This prompts some homeowners to replace their old ovens entirely. But many do-it-yourselfers know they can refinish the outside of oven doors with fresh coats of paint. Before you even think about applying paint, however, you need to understand the importance of proper preparation, or you are likely to end up with a disappointing finish that won't hold up under duress. Things You'll Need
- Dish soap
- Coarse brush
- Rags
- 80- to 120-grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth
- Heavy-duty fabric drop cloth
- Masking paper
- Blue painter's tape
- Epoxy appliance spray paint

Unplug the oven and ensure that it is cool.

Clean the surface of the oven door using soap and a coarse brush. Rinse away all soap residue using a wet rag. Allow the door to dry completely.

Encourage paint adhesion by sanding the oven door with 80- to 120-grit sandpaper. Do not over-sand. Stop sanding when the surface of the door feels slightly abraded or rough to the touch.

Wipe down the oven door using a tack cloth.

Cover flooring beneath the oven door with a fabric drop cloth.

Apply masking paper and blue painter's tape to any areas on or adjacent to the oven door that you want protected from paint overspray.

Apply a light coat of epoxy appliance spray paint. Do not attempt to cover the oven door in one coat. Do not over-apply, as this may lead to runs. Apply only a light coat.

Allow the paint to dry for two hours, then apply additional coats as necessary.

Tips & Warnings
Never attempt to refinish the outside of an oven door with anything but heat-resistant, epoxy appliance spray paint, or you may risk a fire.
Be sure the oven is unplugged or you may risk starting a fire.
