Connect a broadband (cable) router to your Xbox 360 by running a network cable from the console's input jack into the broadband device's output jack. According to Broadband-Guide.net, you will experience comparable data transfer speeds to DSL.

If you don't have broadband Internet access, another option is to use a wireless access point to connect to Xbox Live. You must have an Xbox 360 Wireless N Adapter, available at most stores where Xbox products are sold. Plug the wireless antenna into the Xbox 360's USB port, and you will see a list of connections for hooking up to Xbox Live.

Test your Internet connection by selecting "My Xbox" from your console's main menu, selecting "System Settings," then "Network Connections." There will be an option for testing your connection. If you use the wireless adapter, you can also see if you have a wireless Internet connection by checking the LED light on the adapter itself. It should display green if you are connected to an access point.

Now that you're connected to the Internet by broadband or wireless, you must create an Xbox Live account or log in to an existing account by selecting your Xbox 360 user menu under "My Xbox." If you are an existing member, you will be prompted to log in with your username and password. Now you can use Xbox Live without a DSL modem.

To create a new Xbox Live account select "Join Xbox Live" under "My Xbox" and your user menu. The Xbox 360 will guide you through a step-by-step process, including creating a unique user name and password and also obtaining credit card billing information if you choose an Xbox Live Gold Membership.
