How to Restring a Homelite String Trimmer thumbnail
Restringing your Homelite string trimmer should take less than 10 minutes.

After hitting enough chain-link fences, woody weeds and other hard objects, the nylon string on your Homelite string trimmer inevitably will run out. Typically, it costs about half as much to restring your trimmer yourself than buying pre-strung spools. When you go to the hardware store to buy line, seek out .080-inch diameter monofilament string, which is what Homelite recommends. With replacement string in hand, you should be able to restring your Homelite trimmer in less than 10 minutes. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the spark plug wire to prevent the trimmer from accidentally starting while you're servicing it. Twist off the spool retainer on the string head by using a counterclockwise motion. Pull the spool assembly and spring off the string head.

    • 2

Discard any string remnants on the spool. Measure and cut two 9-foot lengths of string. Slide one end of the first string into the anchor hole and wrap counterclockwise around the top of the spool. Place six inches of string through the upper spool flange slot.

    • 3

Take the other 9-foot section of string and repeat the process above, wrapping the string around the bottom of the spool.

    • 4

Thread both ends of string through the eyelets on the string head. Reattach the spool, and spool retainer to the string trimmer. Rotate the spool counterclockwise while pushing down until the spool is snug and locked in place in the string head. Reattach spark plug wire.
