How to Replace Overhead Boat Carpet
You might wonder why there's a layer of ratty carpeting on the overhead of the interior of your boat. Carpeting is sometimes used to mitigate sound or as a thin layer of insulation. As soundproofing--it keeps a loud stereo from disturbing those on deck. As insulation, it keeps the temperature in the cabin constant. Removing and replacing the overhead carpet can be as simple or complex as you choose offering you the opportunity to customize your boat's interior.
Things You'll Need

- Putty knife

1
Use a screwdriver to remove any trim on or around the carpeted area. Trim across the middle of the carpeted area will cover the screws used to hold the overhead (ceiling) panel in place.
-
2
Remove visible screws. If there are screws visible under the trim, have your assistant hold the panel in place while you remove them. Start in the center of the panel and work to the edges. If there are no screws, run your fingers through the carpet feeling for the staples that hold the panel in place. Pry them out as you find them, starting in the center of the panel.

3
Remove the ceiling panel and carry it to the deck. At this point, you must decide if you plan to remove the carpet from the panel and replace the carpet, or if you will apply carpet to a new panel. If you choose to retain the current panel, use a putty knife to scrape the carpet (which has been glued in place) and adhesive from the panel.
-
4
Apply marine carpet adhesive to the panel, should you plan to re-carpet the panel or install a new panel with new carpet. Press the new piece of carpet into place, using the putty knife to ensure good contact; work the carpet into the adhesive with the putty knife's blade. Use a jack knife or carpet knife to trim any excess carpet hanging over the edge of the panel.
-
5
Return the carpeted panel to its position and have your assistant hold it in place while you secure it to the overhead supports with screws or a commercial staple gun. Begin screwing or stapling in the center of the area and work outward toward the edges.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure that you use marine carpet adhesive. Household carpet adhesive will break down quickly in the marine environment.
Re-use the trim you removed if it still looks good.
Work on the overhead of a compartment involves the possibility that the overhead panel may fall on you. Appropriate caution is advised.
