How To Adjust Sensors on Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door Opener

Adjust a sensor that may be out of alignment.

The sensors that are on the Craftsman ½ HP garage door opener operate the same as all opener photo-eye sensors. The only adjustment you can make is realigning a sensor if it has been hot or knocked out of alignment. One sensor sends a signal to the opposite sensor in the form of an invisible beam. When the beam is broken, the garage door opener will not close the garage door. You can check several things to correct the problem.

Instructions

1. Push the garage door opener wall button station to open the garage door to the fully open position.

2. Wipe the lenses off both of the safety sensors with a clean cloth. Sometimes dust or moisture can obstruct the invisible beam and cause the safety sensors to alert the opener that there is an obstruction.

3. Inspect the wires to make sure that they are still secure to each sensor. Trace the wires up the wall and over the ceiling, and inspect where the insulating staples secure the wire to the wall and ceiling. If a staple has worn through the wire insulation, it is causing a short in the wire. Replace the wire if necessary.

4. Look at the LED lights on each sensor to notice if both are lit. Place the claw portion of a hammer over one of the sensor brackets, and bend the bracket until both LED lights stay lit without dimming.

5. Test your garage door opener by pressing the button on the wall station.

Tips & Warnings

• If these small adjustments and checks do not solve the problem, replace the sensors with a new set. The opener will not operate without working sensors attached.
