How to Make Aloe Vera Shampoo

Aloe vera has many medicinal uses.

Using aloe vera shampoo is a luxurious way to nurture damaged, dry or lifeless hair, and it's quite easy to make at home with only a few simple ingredients. All hair types respond well to aloe vera, though it works best on dry hair. Make the moisturizing action of this homemade shampoo even stronger by using essential oils that complement your hair type. This recipe yields approximately four oz. aloe vera shampoo, but it can be multiplied for larger batches. Simply keep a small bottle in the shower containing enough shampoo for about a week, and store the rest in the refrigerator.

Things You'll Need

• 2 oz. aloe vera gel
• 1 oz. liquid castile soap
• 1 teaspoon liquid vegetable glycerin
• 20 to 30 drops essential oil (optional)
• Small mixing bowl
• Plastic squeeze bottle
• Labels

Instructions

1. Combine the aloe vera gel, liquid castile soap and liquid vegetable glycerin in a small mixing bowl. Stir well and add the essential oils, if desired.

2. Transfer the aloe vera shampoo into a small squeeze bottle. Label with the contents and store in the refrigerator until ready to use, or leave the bottle in the shower if you'll be using within one week.

3. Use your aloe vera shampoo by squeezing a dime-sized amount into the palm of your hand and massaging into the hair, beginning at the scalp and working your way down to the ends. The shampoo will not produce many suds, but it cleans gently and naturally.

Tips & Warnings

• Use essential oils that complement your hair. Lemon and orange are good for oily hair, lavender and rose are good for normal hair and rosemary and geranium are good for dry hair.

• The ingredients needed to make aloe vera shampoo can be purchased at your local natural health store and at some craft and hobby stores.
