How to Reinstall MS IE 6.0 for Windows 98

Reinstalling Internet Explorer 6.0 for Windows 98 can return stable website browsing to your computer system. The reinstallation can be accomplished with your Windows 98 disc or using an alternative Internet browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari or a different version of Internet Explorer to download the necessary files. Downloading the old version is preferable because reinstalling Internet Explorer 6.0 from the disc will also reinstall Windows 98. Restoring the Windows 98 operating system will delete your files and personal settings. These must then be manually restored.

Instructions

Installing From a Web Browser

1. Open an alternative Internet browser if you have one installed on your computer. Generally, this is done by double clicking the browser's icon on your desktop.

2. Navigate to Oldversion.com. Select "Internet Explorer" from the drop-down menu in the blue menu bar and click the arrow next to the menu or scroll down to "Internet" and click on "Internet Explorer" there. Scroll down to the "Internet Explorer 6.0" link and click it.

3. Click "Save" on the download window pop-up. Once you have downloaded the file, navigate to the downloaded file on your computer and open it.

4. Follow the on-screen installation instructions to re-install Internet Explorer 6.0 on your Windows 98 system.

Installing from Disc

1. Find your Windows 98 disc and the proper documentation that came with it. This disc was most likely supplied when you bought Windows 98 or your computer.

2. Contact the Microsoft replacement center directly at 800-360-7561 if you need a new copy of the disc. Additional help may be also available by contacting this number.

3. Back up all of your files to a disc or other external storage device. Make sure you have an external record of any saved passwords or other personal data stored on your computer.

4. Insert your Windows 98 disc into the CD drive. Navigate to "My Computer" and double click on the CD drive to run the disc.

5. Follow the instructions on screen and in the supplied documentation to restore Internet Explorer 6.0 from the Windows 98 disc.
