How to Put Shells or Beads Into Dreadlocks

Add beads to your dreadlocks.

If you are looking to add some color and style to your dreadlocks, consider adding a few pieces of jewelry. The possibilities for hair jewelry are endless and you can use your imagination to add objects such as colored beads, wooden beads or cowrie shells to your hair.

Things You'll Need

• Embellishments such as cowrie shells and beads
• Needle
• Thread
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Thread the needle with whatever color thread you have chosen to work with.

2. Single out a dreadlock that you would like to adorn with an embellishment.

3. Thread the dreadlock through the embellishment and move the embellishment up or down the dreadlock until you have found your desired spot.

4. Hold the embellishment in place with the fingers of one hand.

5. Grab the end of the dreadlock and tie a knot right below the embellishment to secure it in place.

6. Sew the embellishment into the dreadlock using the threaded needle. Make sure the the embellishment is secure.

7. Cut the end of the thread so there is no visible thread hanging down on the dreadlock.

Tips & Warnings

• Play around with various styles of embellishments and placement on the dreadlocks. Some embellishments can be placed high on the head toward the crown, while others can be placed lower down toward the end of the hair.
