Ping another computer over a wireless network.

When you are connected to a wireless hub, your computer is able to "see" the other computers in the network because they are connected together. This connectedness allows you to perform operations such as pinging other networked computers, which will tell you if the computer is online and verify what the IP address of that computer is.

Things You'll Need

  • Name or IP address of computer on network

Instructions

    • 1

Open a command prompt on your computer by clicking "Start," clicking "Run," typing "cmd" and then hitting the "Enter" key.

    • 2

Type "ping 123.456.789.123" or "ping computer_name" where you substitute in the IP address or computer name of the computer you want to ping for "123.456.789.123" and "computer_name," respectively.

    • 3

Look at the "Reply from" line in the response from running the ping command. If you pinged an IP address, that IP address will be returned, informing you that the computer with that IP address is online. If you pinged a computer's network name, the IP address that name resolves to will be returned, telling you the IP address of that computer.
