How to Become a Real Estate Broker in Massachusetts

Getting your real estate broker's license in Massachusetts is not difficult, but it does take time. The state requires beginners to take two classes: one to become a real estate salesperson and the other to become a broker. Along the way, you'll gain experience working in a real estate office. You can find classes offered from western Massachusetts through Cape Cod, so there should be an authorized school near your community.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete a 24-hour pre-licensing course to become a real estate salesperson. Find an approved course from the list of authorized real estate schools in Massachusetts (see Resources).

    • 2

Get work experience as a salesperson. Massachusetts requires applicants to have one year of experience working in a real estate brokerage prior to applying for their own licenses.

    • 3

Obtain real estate broker's education, which consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction. You will choose an approved program from the same list of authorized real estate programs (see Resources). In broker education classes, you'll learn how to talk to clients, how to present a home and how to navigate legal issues.

    • 4

Get a Candidate Guidebook upon completion of your 30-hour broker training. This guidebook contains relevant information about the broker exam and real estate broker application.

    • 5

Take the exam. According to Mass.gov, broker exams are offered twice daily in Boston from Tuesday through Saturday and on Saturday at other Massachusetts locations.

    • 6

Receive your license on exam day if you pass the exam. As a license real estate broker in Massachusetts, you can open your own business or join a firm.
