How to Get the Cheapest SR22 Auto Insurance

Finding cheap SR-22 insurance doesn't have to be a nerve-racking experience.

If you have been caught driving without insurance, you may need an SR-22 to get your license back. An SR-22 is a certification an insurance company files with your state's motor vehicle division, stating that you carry the required auto insurance. Getting an SR-22 insurance policy can be an expensive proposition, but there are methods you can use to get the cheapest policy possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact an independent agent who represents several different auto insurance companies. An independent agent can tell you which of his companies offer SR-22 policies and can pull quotes from multiple companies to help you compare rates.

    • 2

Obtain quotes from "direct writer" companies. Direct writers are companies that work directly with consumers over the phone or via the Internet rather than through an agent. Because direct writers tend to have fewer overhead costs than traditional auto insurance companies, they can sometimes offer lower rates, even on SR-22 policies.

    • 3

Ask your agent about policy discounts. While most companies offer discounts for drivers with clean records, you might qualify for certain discounts even if you need an SR-22. For example, you might qualify for a multicar discount if you purchase a policy insuring more than one car.

    • 4

Purchase only the state-required minimum coverage limits. Most states require relatively little coverage--for example, Ohio requires drivers to carry only $25,000 in bodily injury liability and $7,500 in property damage liability. The lower the policy limits, the less you will pay for insurance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never just purchase the first policy you find before assessing several policy quotes. There are plenty of options available, even for drivers who need an SR-22; so you should be able to save quite a bit of money by comparing multiple quotes.

  • Although purchasing insurance at the state-required minimum limits will help you get a cheaper policy, it may not adequately protect you. If you cause injuries or damage above your policy limits, most states allow the injured party to sue you for the difference.
