How to Restore a Car Gas Tank
Car gas tanks are victims of corrosion when stored outside or left in vehicles exposed to weather. Metal gas tanks, used on older models, often rust from the outside in. These tanks are restored using typical metal restoration techniques. They involve removing the rust and resealing the tank to prevent future damage. The technique will make old gas tanks like new again, but you need some special skills to complete the job.
Things You'll Need
- Grinder
- Sand discs
- Metal sand paper
- Sanding blocks
- Water
- Rags
- Tape
- Primer
- Automotive paint
Instructions

1
Locate all the areas of rust and corrosion on the old car gas tank. This includes minor pitting on the metal as well as larger rust spots.
-
2
Grind out the rust using a metal grinding disc and grinder until the rust is completely removed.
-
-
3
Fine sand the rust spots and pitted areas using metal sandpaper and a sanding block with water. Sand until the metal is smooth and even and all the pits and corroded areas are indistinguishable from the existing metal.
-
4
Clean the gas tank with a rag to remove excess metal filings and grease. Use a degrease agent to remove tough grease stains. Dry completely with a clean rag.
-
5
Tape off the fuel nozzle line and gas cap with painter's tape. Then apply a single coat of automotive grade primer. Let dry for four to six hours and apply another coat of primer.
-
6
Finish the tank with a coat of automotive grade paint designed for gas tanks or high heat areas. Cover the entire tank and let dry for at least a day. Then apply a second coat of automotive paint and let dry for another 24 to 48 hours.
