How to Mount a Gun Vault
Gun vaults are metal enclosures used to store guns securely. Typically made of steel and sized to fit either beneath a shelf, desk, dash or bed, gun vaults provide a safe storage option for handguns with either a mechanical or electronic locking mechanism. Mounting a gun vault is a simple process but one that should not be overlooked. The security of the guns in a vault is largely dependent on how securely the vault is mounted to a surface.

1
Select a mounting location for the gun vault. Choose a location that will provide a secure mounting option and allow for easy adult access. Be sure it will not interfere with any moving parts or electrical wiring if installing the gun vault in a car. Hold the empty gun vault in the desired location to check for adequate clearance and accessibility.
-
2
Remove the drilling template from the information provided by the manufacturer. Orient the paper template so that the mounting keyholes match those of the vault as it will be mounted.
-
-
3
Place the paper template on the mounting surface and make marks with a permanent marker at the noted points where holes should be drilled.
-
4
Place a drill bit into the chuck of the drill; then tighten and drill pilot holes for the installation. Refer the directions from the manufacturer as to drill bit size. Also, depending on the mounting hardware, you can compare the bit to the screw or anchor and select a bit that is slightly smaller.
-
5
Insert screws, or anchors and screws, into the pilot holes as necessary. Depending on the mounting surface, such as dry wall, wood or metal, it may be necessary to first insert an anchor, then the mounting screw.
-
6
Place the vault on the mounting surface and position the keyhole-mounting slots over the installed screws. Slide the vault onto the screws and then back so the screws will engage the mounting key slots on the vault.
-
7
Remove the foam lining from the inside of the vault and install additional screws through the vault and into the mounting surface. Tighten all screws tightly without stripping the threads so that the vault will be held securely in place. Replace the foam lining.

Tips & Warnings
When considering a location, attempt to select a mounting point where the vault may be accessed while keeping in mind that it should not be too easy for a child to reach.
