A Gamertag represents your Xbox Live identity and is the first thing other gamers see when you join a game. You may tire of your initial Gamertag choice a few months down the road. Luckily, you can easily pay to change your Gamertag at any time while logged into Xbox Live. The process is quick, taking just a few minutes.

      Turn on your Xbox 360 and go to the dashboard.

      Press the guide button, select "Profiles," then log into Xbox Live using the Gamertag that you wish to change. The guide menu will automatically close when you log in.

      Navigate to "My Xbox" using the left thumbstick. Scroll right once to view your Gamertag avatar and basic summary.

      Press the "A" button to open a new profile menu. Select "Edit Profile" from the list of options.

      Select "Gamertag" from the list and read the introduction page that explains how to change your Gamertag. You cannot continue if you don't have 800 Microsoft Points. Select "Continue" if you do. If you don't, select "Redeem Code" to add Microsoft Points to your account. Once you continue, you will be able to enter your new Gamertag.

      Enter your new Gamertag into the appropriate text box. Xbox Live will check the availability of your desired Gamertag. If it's available, you will be sent to a confirmation page. If not, Xbox Live will send you a list of alternates, or you can enter a new Gamertag.

      Select "Confirm" to change your Gamertag and charge your account 800 Microsoft Points.
