How Do I Repair or Replace a 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis Window Motor?

The window regulator found in the Mercury Grand Marquis is a single-channel, cable-operated mechanism. The channel has a roller on both ends and a window support that rides in the middle of the vertical channel. The window motor is secured to the doorframe and operates a cable that loops around the window regulator vertical channel. As the motor changes direction, the cable lifts or lowers the window.

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • ¼-inch drive ratchet
  • Set of ¼-inch drive sockets

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the ignition key on and lower the window halfway if possible. If it will not lower, this will be dealt with later. Using the Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws in the armrest and on the bottom of the door panel.

    • 2

Lift the door panel straight up to unhook the panel from the door and pull it away just enough to disconnect the electrical plug from the window switch. Remove the panel. Peel the moisture barrier away from the access hole in the door. Disconnect the electrical plug from the window motor. Wedge a common screwdriver against the window, into the window channel to hold the window in place.

    • 3

Drill out the center of the two ¼-inch rivets at the bottom of the vertical window channel. Use the chisel and hammer to knock the remainder of the rivet out of the door. Remove the two nuts that secure the window to the horizontal window lift under the window, using a 10mm socket.

    • 4

Remove the bolts securing the window motor to the doorframe, using the 10mm socket. Remove the two nuts on the top of the vertical channel, using the 10mm socket. Remove the window regulator and the motor as a unit, through the access hole in the door.

    • 5

Install the new regulator and motor in the access hole in the door. Hold the vertical channel upright and position the two studs on the top in the holes in the door. Install the two 10mm nuts on these studs loosely.

    • 6

Install the two ¼-inch bolts and nuts in the two bottom holes in the door and vertical channel vacated by the rivets. Tighten the top and bottom nuts at this point. Locate the window motor over the holes in the door and install the three 10mm bolts and tighten. Plug the electrical plug into the window motor. Slide the window down into the vertical lift channel and install the nuts and tighten.

Install the moisture shield. Plug the electrical connector into the window switch on the door panel followed by installing the door panel.
