How to Hang a Heavy Painting on a Plaster Wall
A task every home owner must tackle is properly hanging a heavy picture or mirror on a wall. If the walls are made of plaster, then there are additional considerations that must be dealt with, such as locating a stud. Run an electronic stud finder along the wall where the picture is to be hung. Locate and mark the placement of the studs with a pencil. Generally studs are located every 16 inches; however, with plaster walls, the density of the lath (thin strips of wood stabilizing the plaster) can throw off the stud finder. Run the stud finder down the wall vertically to make sure it is reading an actual stud.

Hold up the picture frame in the desired location and have an assistant mark the four corners on the wall with a pencil. Choose a stud that can serve as the anchoring point from which a metal wire can be strung to support the weight of the frame.

Hammer an eight penny or larger nail into the stud. String a wire through the two supports on the back of the frame. Hang picture on the nail.
