1991 Ford Explorer Radio Removal
1991 was the first model year for the Ford Explorer SUV, which was the best selling SUV in America for much of the 1990s, according to "Popular Mechanics." The 1991 and 1992 Ford Explorer dash is a bit different than later models. On 1991 and 1992 models, the radio finish panel must be removed before the radio. Like many other Ford vehicles, the Explorer requires a set of special, but inexpensive, tools for radio removal.

Gather the tools needed to complete the procedure. The Ford radio prongs are available at most auto parts stores and sound shops. You can also purchase a set from several online retailers.
Open and support the hood. Use the pliers to disconnect the negative cable (--) from the battery. This prevents shock and an accidental short circuit.

Open the ashtray compartment beneath the radio. In the rear part of the ashtray compartment, you'll find a metal tab. Push this tab down while pulling the ashtray forward to remove it from the console.

Remove the two Phillips screws behind the ashtray. These screws secure the radio-finish panel. Grasp the panel and pull it firmly away from the dash. Set it to the side.

Insert the Ford radio prongs into the holes on the radio. These holes become visible when the radio finish panel is removed. Push the prongs into the holes until you hear a "snap." This sound is the radio clips disengaging.

Pull the radio straight forward to remove it. It comes out easily. On the rear, you'll find two connections: the antenna lead and the radio wiring harness. Unplug both from the back of the radio.
