How to Put a 2000 Mustang Convertible Top Down

The 2000 Ford Mustang convertible comes with a power-operated top. The procedure to lower the top is simple and straightforward, but it may be unknown if you haven't had the vehicle long or don't have an owner's manual. Because the top is power-operated, an electric motor controls its mechanism. If your battery is dead or if the vehicle isn't turned on, you'll be unable to lower the top. If the top does not lower after following the procedure, your convertible top motor may be bad. Seek professional assistance to have it inspected.

Instructions

    • 1

Bring your Mustang to a complete stop. Move the gearshift to "Park" and set the parking brake lever. The top will not lower if the parking brake is not set. Leave the engine running.

    • 2

Inspect the cargo compartment behind you. Make sure it is empty. This is where the top folds; if items are left in the compartment, the top will be unable to fully lower.

    • 3

Pull the two top handles outward to unhook the top from the windshield frame. These handles are located above the sun visor on each side.

    • 4

Push and hold the "Open" (front part of the switch) button in front of your center console. The top lowering process will begin. First, the windows will lower, and then the top will fold back. Do not release the button until the top is fully stored in the compartment.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you're ready to raise the top, repeat the entire procedure, pressing the bottom of the convertible top switch instead of the top part. Lower the windows prior to raising the top. Once the top is fully raised, push the two handles inward to engage the locking pins into the windshield frame.

  • Don't lower the top when it's wet. The water will get in your interior.
