How to Tell If a Saltwater Fish Is Pregnant
Whether you raise fish in a tank or go fishing a bit, it is good thing to know when a fish is pregnant. For those in a tank, salt water and tropical fish can sometimes eat their young. Knowing when a fish is pregnant will allow you to remove it from the tank when the time comes. When fishing, you don't want to keep a pregnant fish because she is ensuring that there will be fish in the waters for years to come.

Watch for a fish that are not eating very much. This is an indication that a fish is pregnant and is easy to observe in fish that are being kept in a tank.

Look for fish that are experiencing difficulty swimming. Pregnant fish become heavy with their offspring and tend to struggle to swim normally. This is not an indication with all species, but if you do happen to see one in this predicament, it is a good guess that the particular fish is pregnant.

Look for the gravid spot near the bottom rear of the fish. This is a dark spot that will get bigger and darker as a fish becomes further along in pregnancy. If you find a fish with a larger than normal spot, she is pregnant. This can be visualized in a tank or after catching a fish on a fishing trip.

Observe the lower belly area of the fish in a tank or one that was just caught. If it seems larger or expanded compared to a typical fish of that type, then the fish is pregnant.

Lisa Hurley yeah this is our first time having a fish tank for my daughters, and when we got the fish it was normal and i noticed the past week the belly was getting bigger, and not eating, i was conviced it had babies waiting, so i did some research, im afraid to have little fish, cause they say they eat there own babies

It's actually pretty cool watching them being born. I had the same thing happen with some that I got. Once they were born I had to bump up the food a little bit and make sure they had plenty of plants in the tank so the babies could hide.

great one of the fish that wegot for the fish tank is pregnant, not what I was expecting to find out, been watching the fish for a while and noticed that it got a big belly, and I looked up about tropical fish pregnancies, and now I know that this fish called whiety is pregnant, soon, gabby and autumn will have little baby fish in the tank... lol great

Most fish don't get "Pregnant" they lay eggs and it's usually fertilized outside of the females body. Even if saltwater fish were to breed, they usually start life microscopically and are very hard to keep and feed. Hence we are unable to breed most saltwater fish.
