How to Prepare for the MCP
The Microsoft Certified Professional or MCP is a term used to classify a variety of Microsoft certifications including: the Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA), Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA), Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD), Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), and Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP). If you receive a passing grade on any of these certification exams, it is generally referred to as a MCP. Earning a MCP could potentially increase your annual salary and make you more marketable in your field.

Research the various certification exams on Microsoft.com to decide which MCP(s) best suit your career. Although, you may need to take several certification exams to become more competitive in your field, the payoff will be worth the time. Deciding what exam to take first is essential. Review your current job responsibilities and determine which MCP certification matches those responsibilities, and take that exam first.

Get some hands-on experience with Microsoft technology/products prior to taking any of the exams. Generally, there are no prerequisites to take the MCP exams. The only exception is the Microsoft Certified Master program, which does have prerequisites.

Find the preparation guide and practice tests for the MPC exam you plan to take. Preparation guides/exams for each of the MPC exams can be found on the Microsoft website in the "Learning Catalog." There are also classes available to assist you in the preparation for your exam at a cost.

Register for the MPC exam you plan to take. The exam is administered by a third party testing facility, Prometric (see resources). Each exam is approximately $125, and you have to self-register for the exam through Prometric.

Study. Everyone has a study regimen that works for them and utilizing that regimen will assist you in passing the exam.

Tips & Warnings
If you are undecided which certifying exam you should take first, the Microsoft website has a FAQ section to assist you.
Most companies offer job training/tuition reimbursement. Check to see if your company will reimburse you for classes and exam fees.
Schedule your exams at a time when you are most alert. No one wants to take an exam twice.
