How to Sand Blast Automobiles
The quickest, most efficient way of stripping automotive finishes from vehicles is sandblasting. The treatment prepares an optimal surface for priming and painting bare metal. Sandblasting dispenses sand and alternative granules by propelling them with compressed air. Not only does the procedure almost instantaneously remove clear coat and paint, it also dissolves rust and other surface imperfections from the metal. Although convenient, removing automobile paint by sandblasting requires detailed preparation and protective measures.

Cover the windows and front and rear windshields of the vehicle with masking paper secured with painter's tape. Remove the detachable body panels for ideal preparation, but only if you know the proper method for your car's particular make and model. Otherwise, seek professional assistance or proceed to sandblast the paint with the vehicle completely assembled.

Thoroughly ventilate a workspace with ample space around the vehicle. Wear safety goggles and a painter's suit equipped with a hood. Put on a respirator before operating the sandblaster in order to avoid inhaling dust particles from the sand and paint.

Shut off the valves on the sandblaster and fill the tank with silica sand. Turn on the compressor and allow it to pressurize between 40-10 pounds per square inch (PSI). Set the sandblaster on a low pressure setting initially.

Stand 8 to 16 inches from the automobile and point the nozzle at a targeted body panel. Squeeze the trigger and sandblast the surface top to bottom for even coverage.

Gradually increase the pressure setting until the paint is cleanly removed. Use short bursts of sand for smaller areas and long sweeping motions to remove larger segments of paint.
