How to Post No Hunting Signs in Virginia thumbnail
Signs in Virginia must say "Posted" to be considered legal.

If you own private property in Virginia and want to keep hunters from using it, you must post a "No Hunting" sign so that citizens know they are on private property where hunting is not permitted. There are a few simple rules to follow to be sure that your rights are protected if someone does use your land and you want to pursue legal action or simply have them removed.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a sign that has the word "Posted" on it. In Virginia, only signs that say "Posted" are legal.

    • 2

Express your policy clearly on your sign. If you do not want any trespassing at all, say "Posted: No Trespassing. Private Property." That should keep everyone, including hunters, off. If you do not want hunting but do not mind visitors, say something like "Posted: No Hunting" or "Posted: Private Property, No Hunting Without Written Permission of Owner."

    • 3

Include your name on the sign so that people can locate and contact you if they have any questions.

    • 4

Post a sign at each entrance to your land--roads, streams and trails. Be sure it is visible from a vehicle. Mount it about 10 to 12 feet off the ground.

    • 5

Be vigilant. Patrol your land and deal with trespassers as you see fit. Establishing a history of prosecuting people who come onto your land illegally can let others know that you are serious about your "No Hunting" policy.

    • 6

Consider purchasing an aluminum sign so that it does not decay with damp weather. You will have to routinely inspect your signs to be sure they are still visible.

    • 7

Tell the game warden and local authorities that you have posted "No Hunting" signs on your land so that, if someone trespasses, they will be expecting your call for help enforcing your policy.
