One type of sling

Putting a sling on your rifle has several advantages. First, it makes it easier to carry. You just put the slinged rifle over your shoulder and you are good to go. It also frees up your hands, which allows you to get a drink, use a GPS device or do a number of other things. Slings are also used during some competitive shooting events and sometimes while hunting to help stabilize the rifle before firing. A sling will be a handy addition to your rifle.

Buy a Sling System sling from DPMS. They are "Universal" slings, meaning they will fit on almost any gun. Another huge advantage to the DPMS sling is that it requires no tools. It is also ambidextrous, so it will work for you right-handed or left-handed. Find the front of your sling and the velcroed portion that will affix to the front portion of the rifle. These instructions are for attaching the sling to an M-4, a shorter version of the M-16, that is DPMS's most popular product. Affix the velcro attachment to the rifle through the portion of the rifle that makes up the front sight.

Find the rear sling attachment, also made of velcro. Attach it to the butt of the rifle, sliding it through a portion of the stock toward the rear end of the rifle. This part of the sling attachment will also use velcro to connect it to the rifle. Securely affix it through one of the holes in the collapsible buttstock of the M-4. You now have the sling securely attached to your rifle.

Take your rifle to the gun range. Become accustomed to where the gun rests on your body when you have the sling over your shoulder. If it fits too high or too low, there are adjustment pieces on the sling that will allow you to customize the sling to fit wherever you would like it to rest when you are carrying it. Experiment with different heights of the sling until you find the one that is most comfortable on your body. Another nice feature of this sling is that it is also easy to attach to other weapons without complicated instruction. This type of sling is very popular with our troops in both Afghanistan and Iraq. You will be using a top-notch sling very similar to the ones used by our soldiers who are "downrange" right now.
