A public adjuster represents the policy holder in preparing and negotiating a claim for loss or damaged that is covered by an insurance contract. This can include the preparation of a building estimate, an inventory of items lost, damaged or stolen and correct presentation of financial records regarding to the claim. For this service, the public adjuster can charge a fee, usually a percentage of the final settlement of the claim.

      Meet basic criteria. Submit a license application supplied by the state, be over 18 years of age, be a U.S. citizen or legal alien with work approval status from the INS and be a Florida resident. Missing any item on the application will cause the it to be returned.

      Find a state authorized facility and have a full set of finger prints taken. These locations are listed by county and the list is available on line.

      Purchase a Surety Bond in the amount of $50,000, which most be posted along with the with the application. Most insurance agents can write a Surety Bond.

      Satisfy the Florida Public Adjuster's Apprentice Employment Program. This requires employment by a Public Adjuster for a minimum of 100 hours per month for 12 months prior to taking the Florida Public Adjusters Examination.

      Take the Florida Public Adjuster's Examination. You are allowed two hours to complete the examination. An applicant's handbook is available on line. You must pass this test before a license is issued.
