How to Convert DVD to AVI Format

How to Convert DVD to AVI Format thumbnail
Convert your DVDs to AVI.

A DVD contains two main folders (Audio TS and Video TS) that house all of its information in several formats, including VOB, IFO and BUP files. Since a DVD's primary chapters or tracks are stored in its VOB files, you will need software that can isolate and convert the VOBs. (The largest VOB generally contains the feature movie.) Unfortunately, since your computer does not come equipped with such software, you must download or buy it from the Internet. These programs include AVS Video Converter, HandBrake and DVD Ripper for Mac. Please note that converting or compressing DVD quality footage to AVI may result in loss of video quality.

Tips & Warnings

  • If converting for a portable media device, consult your user manual for its standard pixel and resolution settings. You would not want to end up with a larger picture size than your device supports.

  • Please allow several minutes to several hours for conversions to complete. The time it takes will depend largely on the size of your DVD's files and computer's processing speed.
