To install the Microsoft Word processor on your computer, you need either a trial version or a full license of Microsoft Office Word. Buy it alone or buy one of the Microsoft Office suites, which come with other useful Office programs. You can either buy the software in a retail store and install it from a CD or download it off the Office website.

      Determine whether you want the full version of Microsoft Word or a free 60-day trial.

      Buy the full version online at Microsoft Office Online (see Resources). Under "Products," click "Word." Under "Product Information," click "Buy Now."

      Click the "Buy and Download" button to buy Microsoft Word 2007 only. Otherwise, click one of the displayed Office suites. The suites include such programs as Excel and PowerPoint. Some suites are less expensive than Word alone. Click "Buy Now" to purchase a suite online.

      Proceed through the Shopping Cart screen to make the purchase. Once the payment is complete, the product will begin downloading.

      Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

      Click "Free 60-Day Trial" under "Product Information" to test out Microsoft Word before buying it. Click "Download Free Trial." This will launch the download of Office Professional 2007. You can try out Word free for 60 days before making the full purchase. Many new computers come with a free trial pre-installed.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a copy of Microsoft Word that you bought from a retailer, insert the installation CD into your CD drive. A setup wizard will launch and begin to install the program. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation. Microsoft Word will be listed under your Programs on your hard drive once the installation is complete.
