How to Install Interlock 1/4-turn Carpet Tiles

How to Install Interlock 1/4-turn Carpet Tiles thumbnail
Install your carpet with a one-fourth turn for visual interest.

Interlocking carpet tiles have wavy edges that hook to the adjacent tiles, creating no visible seam between the tiles. Interlocking tiles are easier to install than regular carpet, requiring no stretching and no padding under the carpet. The adhesive backing adds enough cushion to make the carpet very comfortable. Another benefit of carpet tiles is the ability to pull up a stained tile and replace it with a new one. Carpet tiles can be installed in all one direction or on one-fourth turns for visual interest. Instructions

    • 1

Clean the space thoroughly with a vacuum or broom. If you've removed tile, wood or any other flooring with an adhesive backing, use a scraper to remove the adhesive from the concrete. Tiles can also be placed on top of linoleum or laminate flooring

    • 2

Find the midpoint of all four walls. Measure the distances from each midpoint to the opposite midpoint and mark the center of the room.

    • 3

Set out your first four carpet tiles so the four corners meet at the center of the room. Set out whole tiles as far as you can to cover the floor. Stop short of tiles that need to be cut.

    • 4

Starting at the center of the room, turn every other tile one-fourth turn. Pick the tile up, rotate it 90 degrees and set it back down, making sure that the interlocking edges are properly lined up. Turn the tiles throughout the entire room.

    • 5

Peel the adhesive backing from one tile and press the tile firmly to the ground. Set the adjacent tile. Slide a butter knife between the two tiles to lift any carpet fibers that have gotten stuck in the adhesive or matted down between the tiles. Place the remaining whole tiles in this same manner. Work systematically across the room until you've glued down all the whole tiles.

    • 6

Cut tiles for the edges of the room. Lay the tile face down at its intended location. Use a felt-tip pen to mark where the tile should be cut. Place a straight edge ruler along the mark and cut the tile with a razor. Remove the adhesive backing and press the tile on the floor. Repeat with the remaining cut tiles.
