If you want to chat with other people who have a Blackberry, you can do so through Blackberry Messenger. Blackberry Messenger is a free instant-messaging application that comes installed on your Blackberry smartphone. With Blackberry Messenger, you can only chat with other Blackberry users. Chatting on your Blackberry is similar to using an online instant-messaging program, such as Yahoo Messenger or AOL Instant Messenger. To chat with someone using Blackberry Messenger, the person must confirm your request to be added to your chat list.

      Open Blackberry Messenger and select “Add A Contact” from the menu. When prompted, enter the email address or PIN of the Blackberry user that you want add to your chat contacts list. Repeat this for every contact you want to add to Blackberry Messenger for chatting. This sends a request to the contact asking them to confirm the request.

      Click on a contact from within Blackberry Messenger and select “Start Conversation” to begin chatting. Type your message and press “Enter” or click the trackball to send it. If you are using the trackball, you have to click a second time to confirm and send the chat message.

      Add other contacts to your chat by selecting the menu button when you are in the conversation screen. Select “Invite” to see a list of your chat contacts. Select one to add them to the chat.

      Send voice or files to your chat buddy by selecting the menu button on the conversation screen and selecting “Send Voice Note” or “Send a File.” Choose the file or voice note to send it.

      Press “Escape” to exit a conversation but not leave it. You can use this when you are having multiple chat conversations that you want to switch between. Select the conversion to go back to it.

      End your chat session by clicking the trackball. Then select “End Conversation” to stop the chat. Do this for each chat that you have open.
