How to Change a Registered Agent

A registered agent is someone who is designated to receive official and legal business documents on behalf of a business. This responsibility requires the registered agent's name and address be made public. The agent has the obligation to forward all business documents to the appropriate person. States require all businesses to have a registered agent in the state where the corporation was formed. Changing your registered agent is as simple as filling out a form and mailing it in with necessary fees.

• Registered agent change form
• Name and address of new registered agent
• Filing fee

Instructions

1. Call the secretary of state's corporation division in the state the corporation was formed. Ask the office to mail you the form needed to change the registered agent of your corporation. Also, many states have these forms available online to print for your convenience.

2. Complete the form. Make sure the form is signed and dated.

3. Mail the completed form and filing fee to the address indicated on the form. Payment must be made in the form of a check or money order. You may also want to mail your form by registered mail so you can confirm delivery.
