How to Attach a Toggle
If you have trouble hooking conventional necklace clasps, attaching a toggle may fix the problem. Toggle clasps are made up of a bar and ring, and can be easier to manipulate. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, styles and colors, and are relatively simple to attach. Select an appropriate toggle clasp to match the style and size of your piece. Toggles can be used on necklaces, bracelets, anklets and more.
Things You'll Need
- Jewelry project
- Jewelry wire
- Toggle clasp
- Crimp beads
- Needle-nose pliers
Instructions
-
-
1
Create an attachment loop. Thread the bar end of the toggle clasp onto a piece of jewelry wire the same diameter and color as the wire or chain in the project. Cut the wire to about 6 inches longer than the intended finished length of the piece.
-
2
Bend about 2 inches of the wire back on itself, so that the clasp is at the end of a loop.
-
-
3
Thread a crimp bead onto both thicknesses of wire. Draw the crimp bead up against the toggle clasp and use needle-nose pliers to flatten the bead and prevent wire slippage.
-
4
Attach the wire to the piece. If you are making a new project, simply string the first beads onto both thicknesses of wire at once. Continue adding beads until the project is the desired length. If you are attaching a toggle to an older piece of jewelry, thread one end of the wire through the end piece of chain or loop on the project. Form a new loop, or use a crimp bead to secure the wire as in Step 3.
-
5
Trim off the excess wire as close to the crimp bead as possible.
-
6
Repeat Steps 1 through 5 to attach the ring end of the toggle.

Tips & Warnings
Oval and square toggles are more secure than round ones.
Make the bar side of a toggle necklace a little longer than the ring side.
