How to Plant Scarlet Runner Bean
The Scarlet runner bean, a running vine, produces ornamental blooms and edible beans. The low-maintenance plant originated in Central America. Scarlet runner beans contain high amounts of lectin, which may lead to dietary intolerance and are therefore usually served well-cooked. Some people do enjoy them fresh, however. Others grow the bean vines purely for decorative purposes as they are quite impressive when in bloom, and attract hummingbirds. The vines can reach a height of 10 feet tall. Plant the climbing Scarlet runner beans near a trellis or fence. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Choose a location that will receive full sun for the majority of the day and has rich, loose soil. There will also need to be a fence or trellis for the vines to climb.
-
2
Mix compost such as manure or peat moss into at least the first 6 inches of soil.
-
-
3
Plant seeds in 1-inch-deep holes that are 6 inches apart. Cover loosely with soil, but do not pat it down.
-
4
Water the area well with a light misting sprinkler to avoid washing the seeds away. Continue watering weekly before the soil has a chance to dry out.
-
5
Feed with a fertilizer that is high in phosporous when blooms begin to form.
-
6
Once beans begin to mature, pick them regularly to promote the formation of new blooms and beans. Pick beans before they have a chance to over-ripen on the vine and become difficult to cook.
