Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of butcher paper. Sketch trees, plants, sun and clouds across the entire sheet and paint them in or have the children do it. Hang the paper on a wall, securing it with masking tape. Put out small bowls of washable paint. Have each child dip his palm in the paint and then press it against the butcher paper. Have the children wash their hands.

Use an entire sheet of 8 1/2-inch by 11-inch red construction paper to create a barn. Cut the roof out of black construction paper. Draw square doors in the front of the barn and two windows on each side. Cut the top and bottom of the doors and then cut down the center of the square. You should have two doors that open and close. Repeat this with the windows. Make the outline of barn on the butcher paper with glue, then attach the barn. Make sure that there is no glue near the doors and windows so they remain functional even after the barn is attached to the paper.

Draw the outline of the torso and head of cows on construction paper. Cut out the cows. Have the children paint the cows. Attach two spring-loaded clothespins to the bottom of each cow's body. The cows will stand up on the clothespin legs. Draw an outline of a sheep on construction paper, including the head, torso and legs. Cut out the sheep. Have the children glue one large kernel of popcorn to the torso of the sheep.

Glue cotton balls into the sky to represent clouds. Make horses by coiling a pipe cleaner around a pencil to create the body. Bend another pipe cleaner in half, making a small loop in the middle. This forms the head. Slide the two ends through the coils, and wrap them together at the other end to create a tail. Cut a pipe cleaner in half. Bend one half over the back end of the coils to create the hind legs, and bend the other half over the front end of the coils to create the front legs.

Paint faces and feet onto the children's handprints to turn them into poultry. Stand the clothespin cows in front of the barnyard scene. Cut brown construction paper into small squares and scatter the pieces onto the floor beneath barn to serve as mud. Open the doors and windows of the barn to finish this three-dimensional scene.
