How to Fund an Infant Adoption
With the cost of home studies, legal fees, transportation and expenses of the birth mother, the price of an adoption can reach tens of thousands of dollars. While it's hard to put a price on the joy that comes from raising a child, the high cost prohibits many from adopting. This can be devastating for a couple who cannot conceive on their own. Fortunately, there are ways that you can fund an infant adoption.

1
Ask for donations in lieu of gifts. No one likes asking for money, but think of all the times you've helped people---buying gifts for a baby shower; giving your sister $20 when she needed it; or volunteering your time for the church fair. Put the word out that you really need money for your dream of adopting a child. Let people know that instead of receiving a gift for your birthday or Christmas, you'd appreciate a donation to your adoption fund. Tell people that even small amounts of money will help make your dream a reality.

2
Have a fundraiser in your community such as a rummage or bake sale. Ask for other community members to donate used items or baked goods to help. This can work particularly well if you are an active member in a church or other organization.

Apply for adoption grants. Some nonprofit organizations specialize in giving grant money to couples who are in the adoption process. Because you don't have to repay the money, this can be a big help. The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption Web site provides links to some of these groups.

4
Earn extra money. Get a part-time job or sell things around your house. This doesn't have to be something you do permanently---just until you get enough money for the adoption.

5
Get a loan to fund your adoption. When all else fails, there is always the option of a loan. While you do have to pay the money back, you'll be able to start your family. Bank of America offers special loans to adopting parents, and some nonprofit organizations, such as A Child Waits Foundation, offer low-interest loans to adopting families.
