Well designed invitations are sure to catch the eye of your invitees.

While many girls in the U.S. celebrate their "Sweet 16," the concept of a sweet 15 birthday party is a longer standing tradition. Hispanic girls celebrate their sweet 15, or quinceanera, with an elaborate party that signifies the end of girlhood and celebrates the birthday girl's transition into maturity. Whether this is a deeply rooted tradition in your family, or a practice that you would like to adopt, proper invitations are essential for this momentous occasion. To save on the cost of expensive invitations, you can make your own sweet 15 birthday party invitations with an array of supplies from your local craft store. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Select a color scheme for your party. Pink is traditionally featured in quinceanera celebrations, though you can select any color that you like. Plan to make invitations that will coordinate with your decorations, favors and perhaps even your dress.

    • 2

Purchase cardstock for the back of your invitations. Plain white or off white invitation cards can be purchased at any craft store. These are usually sold as wedding invitations, but many have few or no embellishments and can be used for any occasion.

    • 3

Write down the wording you want to include in your invitation. At the bare minimum, you should let your guests know the date, time and location of your party. A sentence or two about the party will help guests know what to expect. For a formal event, phrasing such as "You are cordially invited to the quinceanera of..." may be appropriate. For a more casual event, "You are invited to the sweet 15th birthday party of..." is less formal. While a fancy script may seem to add formality to the invitation, it may just make it hard to read. Stick to a basic font that is easy to read.

Print the wording onto your blank invitations. A simple word processing program and home printer can be used for this. Access "Page Setup" in the "File" menu to change the document size to match the size and shape of your invitation cards. Before printing, access the "Print" options under the "File" menu. Select "Properties" and change the size and type of printer paper to match the cards you are using as well. Stick with black ink to make it legible.

Select a second or third cardstock color for embellishments on your invitation. Cut this paper into fun shapes or use it to create a brighter background for one section of your invitation. Try printing your name or the words "Sweet 15" on a small square of brightly colored paper. Paste this to the top and center of each invitation card with rubber cement for bold wording that will stand out. You can also cut the accent paper into the shape of stars or flowers and glue these to the face of the invitation to make it brighter.

Tie a brightly colored ribbon around the top or center of the invitation for a formal yet fun addition. Do this by wrapping a ribbon around the card and securing it with a bow in the front. Gently lift the ribbon and apply a small dot of craft glue to the back of the ribbon to secure it. Additional dots of craft glue beneath the loops of the bow can help it to lay flat. You can also use a glitter pen to draw a design onto the cards or outline the shape of a stamp.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make invitations that properly reflect the formality of your event. If your sweet 15 party is casual, stickers and bubble fonts will be appropriate for your invitation. For a formal quinceanera event, you may want to use an elegant ribbon on your invitations.
