   Ensure you don't have any outstanding checks.

   Check your current balance. Call Bank of America at 800-622-8731 or sign in to online banking through the bank's website and ensure that you do not have any outstanding checks. If you have checks out to merchants that have not yet cleared your bank account, you must wait for the funds to be deducted. Returned checks on a closed bank account can result in legal penalties. If you are closing your account due to fraudulent activity, contact merchants and advise them of the situation before checks are returned.

2. 

   Make other arrangements for bills on ACH debit

   Notify the businesses you pay automatically from your Bank of America account. If you've set up monthly bills such as gym memberships and mobile phone payments to be directly debited from your account, call the companies and inform them of your plan to close your account. Make arrangements to pay with another bank account or by cash or money order. Check your online bill pay function and verify that you do not have any payments scheduled.

3. 

   Include all relevant information in your letter.

   Write a letter to Bank of America. According to the bank's website, requests to close your account must be made by mail. List your full name and account number in your letter and include your current address, so that Bank of America can send any money owed to you. Bank of America advises that a signature must be present for every individual listed on the account.
