How to Connect a Dryer & Vent

How to Connect a Dryer & Vent thumbnail
Vent your dryer properly for safe and efficient operation

Proper dryer venting is important for two reasons. The first is that the dryer will not generate heat if it cannot vent air correctly. Secondly, a dryer that is not properly vented will become a fire hazard over time as lint collects in the hose and the heat generated by the dryer causes the lint to catch fire. When you connect the dryer and vent you need to use the correct process and the right materials. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 4-inch diameter layered aluminum dryer hose
  • 2 dryer hose clamps

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance from the back of the dryer when it is in place to the opening of the vent. Add 18 inches to that measurement and purchase a 4-inch diameter dryer hose in that length.

    • 2

Place a dryer hose clamp on each end of the hose but do not tighten them yet.

    • 3

Install the dryer hose on the exhaust on the back of the dryer, and onto the vent opening in the floor or wall of your laundry room.

    • 4

Tighten each clamp until you feel resistance. Do not over-tighten the clamp on either side, as you could damage the hose, the dryer exhaust and the vent.

    • 5

Turn on your dryer and make sure it is generating heat. If the dryer is not generating heat then your vent may be clogged with lint, or the hose is not covering the dryer exhaust opening and the vent completely. Run the dryer and feel each opening with your hand. If you feel air flowing outside the hose then the hose is not properly installed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a layered aluminum dryer hose for safety. A foil hose can easily get damaged and can catch fire. A plastic hose will dry out over time and crack, and the plastic hose is also a fire hazard.
