How to Set Up a Linksys Router With DSL Internet thumbnail
A router allows multiple computers to share one Internet connection.

The router is an important part of any network. It controls the flow of data between all of the devices on the network and will allow you to share access to your DSL Internet. However, you cannot just plug it in and have it function properly. It must first be configured correctly in order to function. This will also help reduce security threats and increase efficiency and reliability. Unlike your DSL modem, the Linksys routers have firewalls which offer protection from malicious users trying to access your computers.

Instructions

    • 2

Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the port on your DSL modem. Plug the other end of the cable into the port on your Linksys router that is labeled "WAN." This will connect your router to the Internet.

    • 3

Plug another Ethernet cable into the port on the back of your computer. Plug the other end of the cable into one of the remaining ports on the router.

    • 4

Open a web browser on your computer and enter the web address "192.168.1.1." This will take you to the configuration page for your router.

    • 5

Enter "192.168.2.1" in the text box named "Local IP Address." Click "Save."

    • 6

Change the default username and password to something original. Click "Save" and exit the configuration menu.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plug all cables into their ports firmly. Loose cables can keep the devices from transmitting data.

  • Although routers have firewalls installed, they do not stop all viruses from entering your system. It is still important to have an anti-virus program on your computer.
