How Do I Mail My Taxes?

How Do I Mail My Taxes? thumbnail
Mail your tax return to the appropriate IRS office.

Many people dread tax time because of the amount of work required to get the documents in order but adequate preparation can make the process of filing taxes easier. Paper tax returns must be sent to the appropriate Internal Revenue Service (IRS) location to be processed in a timely fashion. The IRS office to which you send your tax return will depend on your state, your filing status and whether you owe taxes.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your tax documents. Ensure that the information you have included is accurate and that you have signed the documents in the appropriate places. If you owe taxes, prepare a check for the amount.

    • 2

Determine where to send your tax return. The address you use will depend on whether you owe money or not. If you have used a tax package, you will find two pre-addressed envelopes or mailing labels in the workbook. The one you select will depend on whether you owe money or not. If these are not included, check the last few pages for the correct mailing address. You can also visit IRS.gov to locate the appropriate mailing address (See Resources).

Consider sending your tax forms and check, if applicable, by certified mail with return receipt. This allows you to track your tax return and ensure that the IRS has received it. It also serves as proof that you sent your tax return in the event that your mail is lost.
