How to Create a CSS Map
CSS mapping is used in creating video game software. It is used primarily to create rooms and backgrounds for characters to use. CSS maps are created using the Valve Hammer Editor program. This program allows uses to create their own CSS maps that virtual characters can inhabit. Creating your first map can be daunting but a simple room can be constructed with a few easy-to-follow steps.

1
Open your Valve Hammer Editor program on your computer. This program can be downloaded from various software sites on the Internet including Games.softpedia.com; a link to a free download of the program can be found in the Resource section. Select the block tool from the left-side menu. This tool can be used to create walls, windows or anything you do not want your game character to be able to walk through.
-
2
Using the block tool, click on the screen and a box will appear. Click again to drag and elongate the box to the size of 250-by-250 pixels. It will resemble a rectangular shape and should be around 190 units tall. Click "Enter" on the keyboard to create the final block.
-
-
3
Press "Ctl-H," making sure the block is still selected with red edges, and a dialogue box should pop up.
-
4
Hollow out the box to map your room using the dialogue box, which should appear on your screen to the left of your selected block after you have pressed 'Ctl-H". Enter "-30" for an average wall thickness for a game room.
-
5
Add light to your room by clicking on the entity tool on the left-side menu. Once the tool is selected, click somewhere inside the box you have created. Hit the "Enter" key to make the light choice permanent. A red dot should appear in the box if this has been done correctly.
-
6
Click on the entity tool once again to open the entity menu. Type "info_player_counterterrorist" into the selection box. This step is crucial in allowing your character to be able to move in your room once you are finished mapping. Click at least eight units up from the bottom of your box. Again, be sure that you have clicked inside the box. Press "Enter" to finalize your selection.
-
7
Compile and finish your map by pressing "F9". A dialogue box will pop up. Make sure normal is checked and click "OK" to start compiling your map. When the compilation process is finished, you will be able to open your map.
